Our History
-
Castle Square Apartments 1992 Re-development: Located on 11 acres in the South End of Boston, the Castle Square apartment complex comprises 500 residential units and retail shops in a mid-rise and low-rise urban setting. In 1992, CSTO partnered with WinnDevelopment on a $125 million redevelopment made Castle Square the single most successful HOPE development and won multiple industry awards, including “Best Urban Tower” and “Best Urban Low Rise.”
Castle Square Apartments 2010-2012 Deep Energy Retrofit. CSTO completed what was then the nation’s largest Deep Energy Retrofit on an existing affordable housing project. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded CSTO with the LEED Platinum Certification, which is its highest green building rating. In 2014, Castle Square was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with an award for Superior Energy Performance. As part of the retrofit, CSTO built out the LEED Platinum Community Center, complete with a technology and media room, classroom space for our elementary education programs, a gym, a versatile teen space, and kitchen facility.
CSTO oversaw a $350,000 renovation of 1,000 square feet of commercial space located within the complex to house its Square Tech Computer Repairs and Training Center, teaching low income Boston youth valuable workforce development skills in technology fields. Through this youth skill development, Square Tech provides the community access to comprehensive technology support and training services.
CSTO facilitated an ongoing community design process with program stakeholders by developing an engaging space and continued involvement in the budget process to create high-impact value for the organization. The process also allowed stakeholders to have a voice in assessing and negotiating all contracts to benefit the organization's goals and mission.
